Salpointe Thrift Shop Shuts Its Doors after 40 Years

It’s the end of an era for charitable thrifters in Tucson. The beloved Salpointe Thrift Shop, which began as the Salpointe Catholic High School Gift and Thrift Shop over 40 years ago, closed its doors for the final time last week.

Factors such as uncertainty about the future of the facility and a volunteer base eager to embark on new ventures have led to the closure of the nonprofit at 1705 E. Fort Lowell Road.

With a rich history, the shop has provided a wide range of goods, including books, school uniforms, appliances, home items, furniture, clothing, jewelry, and essentials, serving people from all walks of life. Donations ranged from vehicles and sailboats to trampolines, saddles, and even dentures.

Founded in 1983 as a way to help fund tuition for Salpointe students in need, the initiative was created by then-Principal Father “Frank” McCarthy, O. Carm., alongside the PEACE Club (Parents Encouraging A Catholic Education), led by Judy Ovitt and Boo Kurtin, with additional support from Charlotte Harris.
