Hawk rescued from soccer net re-released at Salpointe

A red-tailed hawk is back at Salpointe High School just in time for the holidays. The hawk and its mate have made their home in a pine tree near Salpointe for years, becoming so well-known that students and staff have affectionately named him “Lance,” after our Lancer mascot.

About a month ago, however, the hawk became trapped in a soccer net on Salpointe’s field. Jim Armstrong, the school’s grounds and maintenance manager, was able to free the bird, but it was badly injured and unable to fly. The Tucson Wildlife Center was called in, and the hawk underwent treatment and rehabilitation. After a month of care, the center released him back onto the Salpointe field, where he immediately flew to his familiar pine tree, reuniting with his mate.
