World Languages

Emphasizes building an extensive vocabulary presented in a functional/situational context. Students move quickly to develop the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through short stories and creative writing in Spanish. Includes some study of Hispanic culture. The course is primarily taught in Spanish throughout the year.
Prerequisite for freshmen: specific Entrance Exam score. Prerequisite for sophomores and juniors: grade of 70% or higher in current English course. Former Academic Foundations students need World Languages Department approval.

Uses actions and drawings to build an extensive vocabulary base. With this vocabulary, the students move quickly to develop the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing through short stories and creative writing all in Spanish. Includes some study of Hispanic culture. The course is primarily taught in Spanish. All students in this group are encouraged to follow a four-year language program.
Prerequisites: specific verbal and reading scores on the Entrance Exam.

Continues the work of Spanish I. Develops the skills of comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing through stories and creative writing exercises; increases vocabulary and grammatical structures. Taught completely in Spanish; all students are expected to speak only Spanish.
Prerequisites for freshmen: specific Entrance Exam score and specific score on Spanish Placement Test. Prerequisite for sophomores, juniors, and seniors: grade of 70% or higher in either Spanish I or Spanish I H.

Continues the work of Spanish I H with a heavy emphasis on the use of the language in classroom work; continues to develop the skills of comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing through stories and creative writing exercises; increases vocabulary extensively and focuses on key grammatical structures. Taught completely in Spanish; all students are expected to speak only Spanish.
Prerequisite: Spanish I H (grade of 80% or higher) with an acceptable timed writing test; or Spanish I (grade of 90% or higher) with an acceptable writing sample and teacher recommendation, or specific verbal and reading scores on the Entrance Exam and Spanish Placement Test.

Continues the work of Spanish II. Expects all students to speak only Spanish; taught completely in Spanish, emphasizes conversation and fluency while focusing on continued grammar study and expansion of vocabulary. Oral participation is very important, and students are expected to work and get involved in small groups and class discussions. Short stories about Latin America are also discussed. The students are expected to be able to write and speak in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Spanish II (grade of 80% or higher) or Spanish II H (grade of 70% or higher and department approval).

Continues the work of Spanish II H. Expects all students to speak only Spanish; taught completely in Spanish, emphasizes conversation and fluency while focusing on continued grammar study and expansion of vocabulary at a rapid pace. Most classroom work is done in the context of small groups and class discussions. Short stories from Spain and Latin America are also discussed. The students are expected to be able to write and speak in Spanish.
Prerequisites: Spanish II H (grade of 80% or higher and department approval) with an acceptable writing sample; or Spanish II (grade of 90% or higher) with an acceptable writing sample, standardized test, and department approval.

Develops further skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing Spanish with emphasis on review of grammar. Students increase their vocabulary and become more acquainted with Hispanic culture through a variety of readings and films. The class is conducted in Spanish with a view to consolidating and strengthening previous skills and moving beyond.
Prerequisite: grade of 80% or higher in Spanish III or grade of 70% or higher in Spanish III H.

Continues the development of the four language skills of comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Introduces advanced points of grammar but also continues to study the elementary structures. Expands on a variety of oral and written activities. Strengthens and develops oral and written skills, vocabulary and knowledge of Hispanic culture through reading selections and videos. Designed to serve those students who want a challenge greater than Spanish IV, but are not interested in an AP course.
Prerequisites: Spanish III H (grade of 80% or higher) and an acceptable writing sample, or Spanish III (grade of 90% or higher) with an acceptable writing sample and department approval.

This class is conducted in Spanish. Students will continue to reinforce the four skills of language (reading, listening, speaking and writing). Course continues grammar and vocabulary acquisition. Course will emphasize writing as form of communication.
Prerequisites: student must understand spoken Spanish and must have a specific score on the Spanish Placement Test.

Continues the development of the four language skills of comprehension, reading, listening, and writing. Introduces advanced points of grammar and expands on a variety of oral and written activities. Strengthens and develops oral and written skills, vocabulary and knowledge of Hispanic culture through reading selections and videos. This class is conducted in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Spanish II Heritage Learners (grade of 80% or higher) or specific score on the Spanish Placement Test.

Stresses literature, composition, conversation and culture for native speakers. Course continues advanced grammar study and vocabulary development. Class is conducted entirely in Spanish.
Prerequisites: Spanish III Heritage Learners H (grade of 80% or higher), or specific score on the Spanish Placement Test.

French/ Francophone culture is an integral part of study. The course is taught primarily in French throughout the year.
Prerequisite for freshmen: specific Entrance Exam score. Prerequisite for sophomores and juniors: 70% or higher in current English course.

Continues the work of French I with intensive practice in speaking, reading, writing and oral comprehension at an intermediate level of difficulty in functional and situational contexts. Develops appreciation of Francophone life and culture. Class conducted entirely in French with emphasis on gradual refinement of spoken and written French.
Prerequisite: French I (grade of 70% or higher).

Refines students’ knowledge of spoken and written French through conversation activities in functional and situational contexts, oral presentations, advanced reading selections and writing practice. Builds an appreciation of Francophone life and culture. Reviews grammar. Class conducted entirely in French.
Prerequisite: French II (grade of 80% or higher).

Develops advanced skills in speaking, writing, reading and oral comprehension through in-depth study of relevant topics relating to French culture and literature; short novels will be read. Reviews advanced grammar. Class conducted entirely in French with emphasis on developing oral proficiency.
Prerequisite: French III H (grade of 80% or higher).

Introduces the student to the grammar and vocabulary of classical Latin. Students will also be practicing conversational Latin. In learning Latin
roots and prefixes, the student will discover how extensively Latin has influenced the English language. The class will also explore our cultural indebtedness to the Greeks and Romans, especially in the areas of literature, architecture, and mythology. The National Latin Exam is administered during the second semester.
Prerequisite: specific entrance exam score.
Prerequisite for sophomores and juniors: 70% or higher in current English course.

Continues the instruction of basic Latin, including comparative adjectives/adverbs, the passive voice, the perfect system of tenses, and the pronouns. The content of this course is dependent upon what is completed in the first year of Latin I. Students will also be practicing conversational Latin. The National Exam is administered during the second semester.
Prerequisite: Latin I (grade of 70% or higher) or sufficient performance on a placement exam.

Continues at an accelerated pace the instruction of basic Latin grammar, including comparative adjectives/adverbs, the passive voice, the perfect system of tenses, pronouns. Students will be studying Christian authors (Fathers of the Church), and Latin prayers and/or etymologies of specific academic fields (chemistry, biology, math). Students will also be practicing conversational Latin. The National Exam is administered during the second semester.
Prerequisites: Latin I (grade of 80% or higher) and teacher recommendation or specific score on the Latin Placement Test.

Continues the instruction of intermediate Latin including the subjunctive mood and the indirect discourse, the clauses of fear, cause, concession, consequence, purpose, proviso, time, circumstance, and condition, with continuous review of grammar essentials. The National Latin Exam is administered during the second semester. Students may take the Latin SAT2 exam.
Prerequisite: Latin II (grade of 70% or higher) or Latin II H (grade of 70% or higher) or sufficient performance on a placement exam.

Students are expected to translate accurately from Latin into English and to demonstrate a grasp of grammatical structures and vocabulary. Since the appreciation of Latin requires an understanding of the literary techniques of Latin writers, stylistic analysis is part of the advanced work in the course. It includes the study of the culture, social, political, and religious context of the literature. Latin IV focuses on the study of one or two Latin authors of classical or Christian literature. The National Latin Exam is administered during the second semester.
Prerequisite: Latin III (grade of 70% or higher) or Latin III H (grade of 70% or higher).
